The project is coordinated by BeammWave and has a total budget of MSEK 7.6 whereas the Vinnova grant, under the call “Smartare Elektroniksystem” is MSEK 3.8 and the BeammWave share of the grant has a total of MSEK 1.1.

The project title is “Low complexity MIMO mmWave transceiver architectures for handheld devices”. It has the objective to take BeammWave from a patented design and prototype to a validated production-ready product, and thus enable collaboration with commercial actors.

"The collaboration with KTH, Royal Institute of Technology and Lund University brings tremendous value to us, as we get access to world class mmWave research and knowledge and it also shows the value that we can bring to the universities with our leading-edge design and architecture”, says Stefan Svedberg, CEO of BeammWave.

“The project will run over two years and will have both theoretical and practical components taking us from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 to 6”, says Bengt Lindoff, Chief Systems Architect of BeammWave and project coordinator for the joint project.

BeammWave AB are experts in communication solutions for frequencies over 24GHz. The company is building a solution intended for 5G, in the form of a 3×3 mm radio chip with antenna and associated algorithms. The company's approach is unique and patented, with the aim of delivering a solution with higher performance at a lower cost. The company's share serie B (BEAMMW B) and options (BEAMMW TO1 B) are listed on the Nasdaq First North Growth Market in Stockholm. Certified Adviser is G&W Fondkommission, e-mail: ca@gwkapital.se, telephone: 08-503 000 50.

BeammWave AB joins the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP (https://www.3gpp.org/)) with the intention to contribute with BeammWave’s world class expertise in FR2 (mmWave) for future releases of the global 3GPP standards.

"We are firm believers and heavily invested in 5G but also in future generations of the global cellular standard. We are equally convinced that we, with our unique digital beamforming technology for the mmWave frequency range (FR2), can bring new perspectives to the standard and even further enhance and strengthen 5G as THE innovation platform for the next decade", says Stefan Svedberg, CEO of BeammWave.

"FR2 is sometimes considered just another frequency range, nothing could be further from the truth. FR2 is a new paradigm, not only because of its very specific technical properties but also because it is not isolated to the radio parts of the 5G standard but touches on all aspects of the standard and its implementations. BeammWave also has extensive experience contributing in 3GPP so we expect to be off for a running start", says Per-Olof Brandt, CTO of BeammWave.

About 3GPP

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) unites seven telecommunications standard development organizations (ARIB, ATIS, CCSA, ETSI, TSDSI, TTA, TTC), known as “Organizational Partners” and provides their members with a stable environment to produce the Reports and Specifications that define 3GPP technologies. The project covers cellular telecommunications technologies, including radio access, core network and service capabilities, which provide a complete system description for mobile telecommunications. The 3GPP specifications also provide hooks for non-radio access to the core network, and for interworking with non-3GPP networks.

Gustav Brismark and Paula Eninge are proposed as new board members, to be elected at the next Annual General Meeting on 11 May 2022.

Gustav Brismark, born 1962, Master of Science in Technical Physics from Uppsala University with over 30 years of experience in the telecom industry. Gustav has mainly worked with research, development of ecosystems and value creation of intellectual property rights. Gustav now works as an independent consultant in the IPR area and as a board member of Smoltek Nanotech Holding AB. Gustav has a long experience from Ericsson where he was Chief Intellectual Property Officer from 2016-2019.

Paula Eninge, born in 1970, is a corporate lawyer, with a Master’s in Economics, with a focus on contract design – especially in business development, telecom and IT, intellectual property rights, negotiations and outsourcing. Paula works from her own law firm and has extensive experience in the telecom industry, including from SonyEricsson.

“Paula and Gustav are conscious and obvious choices for us in the phase that the company is now in. We have had both technical and business expertise on the board since before, which will now be supplemented with expertise in IPR and contract design. Gustav and Paula have extensive and in-demand experience as well as international networks from our industry", says Stefan Svedberg, CEO of BeammWave in a comment.

Joakim is electro engineer and PhD in signal processing. During 16 years at a global telecom company, he has managed system design and architecture for both 4G and 5G in mobile phones.

“This position at BeammWave is spot on for my competence and experience. And for a long time, I have been frustrated over the fact that 5G mobility in higher frequencies is slower than it actually can be”, he says.
